Today’s drawing is my take on Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot of 1605—an event remembered every year in the UK with bonfires, masks, and a curious mix of rebellion and remembrance. What makes this piece particularly meaningful to me is the medium. I drew it in coal. Which is interesting, considering coal (charcoal) is one of the core ingredients that was ground and mixed with sulfur and saltpeter to make the very gunpowder stacked in those famous barrels beneath Parliament.
