The sparks, technically called electric arcing, occur when the pantograph briefly loses continuous, solid electrical contact with the OHE contact wire. In winters, fog makes a Contaminant on the wire, which create a thin, insulating layer. When the contact is broken, the high voltage and current are momentarily forced to jump the small air gap, ionizing the air and creating a visible electric arc or spark.
