Now, Lego is bringing the culmination of this technology and play features to a galaxy far, far away with its new Smart Play system. Unveiled at CES 2026, I had a chance to see exactly how Lego is upgrading its Star Wars theme with lights,
The Smart Brick looks very similar to a normal 2x4 Lego brick, but it contains a custom Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) chip which is smaller than one of the studs on the brick itself. It’s joined by an accelerometer and a copper coil, and Lego has created its own Play Engine and Neighbor Position Measurement (NPM) system.
There may be plenty of Harry Potter LEGO sets already, but the release cadence is not slowing down one bit in 2026. A big new batch is now available, including the gorgeous display piece depicting key scenes and characters from the Sorcerer’s Stone.
LEGO is introducing a new way to make its upcoming sets more interactive than ever before: Smart Play. The system uses Smart Tags, which are 2x2 tiles that house digital IDs telling nearby Lego Smart Bricks and Minifigures how to behave.
Just be aware that this BB-8 model is much smaller than the one Lego released back in 2017. The new BB-8 ( model No. 75452) is just over 3 inches tall, whereas the 1,106-piece build ( model No. 75187) was over 10 inches tall.
