The guidelines also advise that Americans prioritize more protein intake, avoid highly processed foods, avoid added sugars, include healthy fats in meals, have diets lower in carbohydrates, consume more whole grains and avoid refined carbohydrates.
Shares in giant food companies such as Kraft Heinz and PepsiCo lost ground Wednesday as top officials in the Trump administration criticized ultraprocessed foods and sugary drinks while releasing new dietary guidelines.
